What are the Limitations of Geofencing?

Although proven in the field, Geofencing does have some limitations associated with it because of how relatively new the technology is.

We have tested with confidence a radius of 20m for both Android and iOS devices. This is the limit to which we feel confident that you will get a prompt all of the time using our integration with Google maps and the onboard GPS. Anything below 20m we cannot guarantee a prompt 100% of the time.

The reason for this is the differences between devices. Apple devices are very standardized and use many of the same components, however, components in each subsequent model year change drastically.

The same can be said, if not more, for Android devices. Since many different companies make phones compatible with the Android operating system, this can lead to hundreds of different phones all using different components that may interact differently with the phone's GPS integration.

Although it is possible for a specific phone to pick up a geofence at 5m, it may not be the same case for a phone with different internal components. This is why we recommend the lower limit of your geofence to be 20m.
