Calculated Column

The Calculated Column feature allows the researcher to create a new column based on performing operations on other columns. A researcher could choose to create a formula to apply to the data in one column, or sum the responses from multiple columns for example.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Select the Calculated Column tab to begin.
  2. Add a label for the new column heading that will be created.
  3. You can now select the Set Formula Tab. This is where you will create the custom formula for the column using variables with a numeric data-type.
  4. Use the provided calculator to choose the operations of your choice, as well as the columns of your choice. In order to inset columns, the Insert Columns tab must be clicked after a column is selected from the drop-down.
  5. The formula is linear, so it is important to choose each operation wisely as you create the formula.
  6. When using operators such as sin, cos, log, tan, exp, sqrt, and abs, the operator must be followed by an opening bracket, a number or column, and a closing bracket.
  7. Once you have created their first calculated column, you may then create other calculated columns as well.
  8. Once a column is created, the Calculated Columns option is available for selection. This heading allows you to View/Edit/Delete previously created columns.
  9. Once you are finished with any changes, you must select the save icon in order for them to apply.

Note:

  • Users choose from column headers in the drop-down, but what is shown in the custom formula display is the column's unique variable number.
  • If there are non-numeric responses within a column that is a part of the new calculated column, the text "Calculation could not be performed” will show up in the cell of the newly created column; this text can be changed by the user.
