Piping

Piping allows you to use a selected variable from a previous question, and display it within the text of a new question.

An example of this would be having a question asking what your favorite color is. We would pipe that selection over to a new question that asks “Why do you like the color (piped response variable) so much?”. Depending on the color choice that variable could be blue, red, yellow, etc.

Make sure that the question choices you use flow well within the context of the piped text. Asking participants a question that does not flow well or fit grammatically could pose problems when answering.

  1. In creating the question you wish the piped answer to be displayed in, select the Pipe Question Responses tab above the question text box.
  2. Select the question you would like to pipe the answer from.
  3. A question answer variable will appear in the text box.
  4. Cut/paste the variable into the text as you see fit.

Piping currently supports the following question types:

  • Text
  • Multiple Choice
  • Sliding Scale
  • Dropdown
  • Phone Number
  • Percentage
  • Numeric
  • Email
  • Date
  • Time
  • Date/Time

Note: Piping will not be available as an option if the Randomize Question Order option is selected.
